How to use DropLink, frequently asked questions, and how to reach us.
1. How to share files
- Open DropLink and tap the Files card.
- Pick the files you want to share from the system file picker.
- The app navigates to the share detail page. A public link is shown at the top.
- Tap the link area to copy it, then send it through any messenger.
- The recipient opens the link in any browser (iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows). They see the file list and tap to download.
- On the same WiFi, the connection auto-switches to LAN direct transfer for full local speed.
- When you are done, tap Stop sharing in the app to invalidate the link.
2. Frequently asked questions
Does the recipient need to install DropLink?
No. The recipient just opens the link in any browser - it works across Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
Are files uploaded to a cloud?
No. On the same WiFi, files never leave the local network. Across networks, files stream through relay nodes without being stored. The link is invalid the moment you stop sharing.
How many people can use one link?
Multiple recipients can download simultaneously. The link dies when you tap "Stop sharing" or close the app.
What if a large file is interrupted?
Browsers resume downloads automatically when possible. If the connection drops, the recipient just refreshes the page - DropLink picks up from where it stopped using HTTP Range, so they do not start over.
Will the transfer keep running when I switch apps?
iOS limits background activity. For large transfers, keep DropLink in the foreground; the screen stays awake automatically. If you accidentally switch away, the recipient refreshes the page to continue.
Can I revive an expired link?
No. Once you stop sharing, the link is dead. Pick files again to generate a new one. This is by design: stopping the share should immediately revoke access.
What does the 8-character code look like?
Something like YNB45BDD. It uses an unambiguous alphabet that intentionally omits
0, O, o, 1, I and l - so codes are easy to read out loud over a phone call without confusion.
Does DropLink work without internet, on LAN only?
The link must be generated through the relay (which needs internet at the moment of generation), but the actual file transfer can happen entirely over LAN once both sides are connected. Future versions may add an "LAN-only" mode that does not require a relay round trip.
