DropLink vs WeTransfer

WeTransfer made the "send a file via a link" workflow famous. But its free tier has tightened over the years — a 2 GB size cap, files expire in 7 days, an email sign-up gate for many features, and ads. DropLink keeps the same drop-a-link simplicity without any of those constraints.

The short version. WeTransfer is a hosted service — your file is uploaded to their cloud, sits there for a week, then expires. DropLink is a relay: your sender app holds the file, our servers stream the bytes between you and the recipient browser without writing to disk. No 2 GB cap. No expiration calendar. No email gate. Same "drop a link" UX.

The Quick Comparison

Files stored on servers Yes (their cloud, 7 days) No (stream-through, nothing on disk)
Recipient app install None — opens in any browser None — opens in any browser
Sender setup Browser upload (or paid app) Native app (faster on mobile, drag-drop on desktop)
Upload time You wait for the whole file to upload before sharing Link is ready instantly; bytes only move when recipient downloads
Same-WiFi acceleration No — always goes through cloud Switches to a direct LAN path on its own — router-limited speed

When WeTransfer Wins

To be fair:

When DropLink Wins

1. The file is bigger than 2 GB

WeTransfer's free tier hard-caps at 2 GB per share. A typical edited video, a project archive, or a software build often exceeds that. WeTransfer Pro raises the cap to 200 GB but costs $12/month. DropLink has no cap — the bytes go directly between the sender's app and the recipient's browser via our relay; we never store the file so we don't care how big it is.

2. You don't want a 7-day expiration clock

WeTransfer auto-deletes free-tier files after 7 days. If your recipient forgets, they need you to re-upload. DropLink keeps the link live as long as you keep the sender app running and haven't tapped "Stop sharing". When you decide to stop, the link dies instantly — your timing, not a hard-coded calendar.

3. You don't want to give WeTransfer your email

WeTransfer's free tier increasingly nags you for an email address (and they email you a lot once they have it — "your file was downloaded", "your file is about to expire", etc.). DropLink has no signup, no email collection, no email at all. You install the app, you pick files, you copy a link. Done.

4. You don't want to wait for the upload before sharing the link

WeTransfer's workflow: you drag the file in, you watch a progress bar climb to 100% (which can take minutes for a multi-GB file on a typical home connection), then you get a link. With DropLink, the link is generated instantly — bytes only move when the recipient actually clicks download, and they go straight from your device to theirs. No upload wait on your side before you can send the link.

5. The recipient is on your WiFi

WeTransfer always routes through their cloud — even if your recipient is on the same WiFi, the file goes up to WeTransfer's servers and back down. With DropLink, same-WiFi recipients get LAN direct transfer automatically: file goes peer-to-peer within the local network at whatever your router can push (50+ MB/s on Wi-Fi 5/6), never touching our relays.

6. Privacy of file content

WeTransfer stores your file on their disk for 7 days. DropLink streams bytes through our relay without persistence — there's no file sitting on our servers to be subpoenaed, accidentally exposed, or accessed by a future ToS change. Whatever you're sharing (a contract, a draft, a personal video), it lives only on the sender device and gets streamed direct to the recipient.

How DropLink Actually Works

The flow is intentionally simple:

  1. Install DropLink on the device that has the files (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows).
  2. Pick the files. Single file, batch, text snippets — whatever.
  3. The app shows you a link like https://idroplink.com/g/AbC123de and a QR code, instantly. No upload wait.
  4. Share the link via any channel: WeChat, SMS, email, Notion, Slack.
  5. Recipient opens the link in any browser — file list, click to download via HTTPS. Same WiFi triggers automatic LAN direct.
  6. When done, tap Stop sharing. Link is invalidated immediately.

Sender-Must-Be-Online: A Real Tradeoff

Because DropLink doesn't store your file on a server, the recipient needs the sender's device to be reachable when they download. In practice:

For 90% of file shares ("here's the photo from last night", "send me that PDF you mentioned"), the sender is around and online. For the other 10%, WeTransfer or a real file host is the right tool.

Privacy and Encryption

DropLink transfers files via standard TLS 1.3 (Apple-provided system frameworks on iOS/macOS). No files are stored on our servers — they stream through our relay nodes without writing to disk. The app collects no telemetry, has no analytics SDK in-app, and no third-party trackers. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail.
